Since announcing our partnership, we’ve raised more than £100,000 for SSAFA, the UK’s oldest Armed Forces charity.
SSAFA has been providing lifelong support to our Forces and their families since 1885. Every year their staff and team of volunteers help more than 65,000 people, from Second World War veterans to young men and women who have served in more recent conflicts.
Our people have been enthusiastically supporting SSAFA and the Forces family in a wide variety of ways since our partnership began in 2015. From holding cake sales for SSAFA’s Big Brew Up campaign, to trekking for five days across Icelandic lava fields, it’s been a constant case of “engineers at the ready”.
Our Chief Sustainability Officer, Ian Hill said: “We’ve always had close ties to the Armed Forces community and we’re proud to say that our relationship with SSAFA is an important part of that. We provide industry leading support for reservists, employability mentoring for armed forces leavers, and we’ve actively recruited nearly 2,500 veterans into Openreach since 2011. Already this year we’ve recruited almost 300 trainee engineers from a forces background.”
Director of Fundraising at SSAFA, Tegan Jones comments: “We are thrilled with this milestone being reached. It’s a testament to the team at Openreach being fully committed since the start of our partnership in 2015. The money raised will go a long way to continue support of the Armed Forces community, both practically and emotionally. We are proud to have a partnership with a business that encourages veterans to become part of their workforce to and forge successful, new careers after leaving the military”.
