Laura Hockett, of Penzance, has not looked back since joining Openreach as a trainee engineer in June 2017. Her typical day sees her visiting Cornish customers to provide phone and broadband services and carrying out repairs.
“I absolutely love the job,” she said. “The career change is the best thing I’ve ever done. I’d worked in an office for a law firm for a number of years, but I wanted to get out and about, experience the countryside and meet more customers.
“The job is everything I hoped it would be – and more. I really enjoy a ‘hands on’ job and giving good customer service. There is a great sense of achievement in getting a customer connected because good communications are such a huge part of people’s lives these days.”
Laura, aged 33, moved to Cornwall from Essex about ten years ago. Her partner, Kirsty Dilley, is also an Openreach engineer based in Cornwall, having joined the business about five years ago.
“We often talk about work when we get home at the end of the day,” said Laura. “Being an engineer is a very varied job with lots of experiences so there’s plenty to talk about!”
