Field Based Coordinator Cassie takes us through a typical day working for Openreach

What did you do before working for Openreach? 
 
Studying for my A levels and working part time in sales in the Motor Industry. 

Why did you choose a career in engineering? 
I consider myself technically minded and hands on. I thoroughly enjoy resolving engineering issues. Engineering is a vast industry with much to offer and every day I learn something new and interesting.  

What do you do? 
I’m a Field Based Coordinator. This involves managing and supporting the build and delivery of the Openreach network to new developments. I survey progress, liaise with and supervise housing developers and building contractors to make sure that the Openreach network is delivered on time for people moving into their new homes and to the quality standard. 
  
How long have you done your current job for? 
I’ve been a Field Based Co-ord for 3 years.

Tell us something interesting about yourself? 
I’m an avid petrol head and I regularly attend racing days all around the UK with my Father. One day I’m hoping to participate, and show my young daughter that women can do anything they choose to.

Take us through a typical day: 
I start the day looking at which new developments I need to visit. The bulk of my day involves being out on site and inspecting what infrastructure has been laid by the property developer and whether it’s of the quality standard in readiness for Openreach to install the cable. 

My job involves solving issues on site and building relationships with the local council and contractors to make sure infrastructure is installed on time and issues are resolved quickly. 

Part of my role is office based and involves ordering stores for the developer on site, updating our systems to show progression of the site and to certify that all developer plans are correct, ready for use by our planners and engineers.  

What do you like most about the job? 
I love meeting new interesting people, spending time in their presence and learning from them. Engineering is ever-growing and there’s always so much more to learn. Every day I absorb something new in engineering and grow to love my job even more.

What do you like least? 
Welsh weather!

What jobs in Openreach have you done previously?
Prior to this I was a customer service engineer for 7 years. This involved installing and repairing phone and broadband lines for business and residential customers –copper and fibre.  This role saw me working in the city centre, farms in rural locations, banks, and police stations. 

Future plans? 
For the next few years, I’m going to enjoy being a Field Based Coordinator.  I’d really like to return to University to study another field one day, and from there, potentially explore the Wider World of Engineering.
