What did you do before working for Openreach? I went to Sheffield University to study Mathematics from 2009 to 2012 and since then I have had a few part time/fixed term jobs before working at Capita Employee Benefits within the pensions implementation team for a year before starting my apprenticeship.

Why did you choose a career in engineering? I chose this career path as it involved working in an industry that is constantly developing and focused on meeting their customers’ demands, as well as allowing me to utilise my skills and experience. 

What do you do? My role involves working with partners and customers to ensure the correct number of engineers are available to work in a specific location and complete the required number of jobs, as well as managing the appointment books and making business decisions that deliver the best service for our customers and industry at the right cost.

How long have you done your current job for? 3 years

Tell us something interesting about yourself? I have represented Great Britain in a sport called Ultimate Frisbee.

Take us through a typical day: During a typical day I will use various computer based tools and data to make sure there are enough engineers working with the right skills to complete the work that is available. This involves making decisions on whether overtime is needed and whether there is a need to loan engineers from one part of the country to another. As well as planning for the next day, I also have to look forward to the following four weeks. 

What do you like most about the job? What I like about my job is that before starting each day I know exactly what I need to get done by the end of it, it is just the journey to that point that differs. This allows me to plan my time effectively and ensure I can deal with anything that comes up last minute.

What do you like least? What I like least is that due to the ever changing environment, I will quite often be asked to make last minute adjustments to the plans I have made. This could be anything from dealing with sudden weather changes that cause additional faults, to increasing the number of jobs being sold to drive profitability.

What jobs in Openreach have you done previously? I have just completed my apprenticeship (September 2017) and I have been in this role throughout all three years at the company.

Future plans? Having only just finished my apprenticeship, I am looking to develop my management skills and continue to get involved with project work that will aid my current role and colleagues. This will put me in the best position to climb up the management ladder and view more of the business.
