Become a civils engineer

As one of our civil engineers you’ll be out supporting us to build our network.

This isn’t an office job and you won’t be tied to one location. You’ll be on the road, visiting lots of different places and working in all kinds of locations. You might find yourself working in quiet residential cul-de-sacs, busy roads or operating trenching machines across fields. The type of work you’ll be carrying out will be physical, involving small civil engineering work in the highway including excavation, backfill, hot and cold-lay reinstatement, frame and cover renewal and traffic management set-up.

You’ll work within a team and there are always people for support at the end of the phone – from your manager and team mates to dedicated support teams. They’re all there to help.

What makes a great Openreach Civil engineer?

Openreach engineers have diverse backgrounds, with varied experiences. We’re looking for people with a willingness to get stuck in, an ability to connect with people, and who enjoy a physically demanding role.

We’re looking for people who’re happy working outdoors. Whether it’s glorious sunshine or bracing British weather, our Civil engineers are out supporting us to build our network.  You’ll need to be open to new technology. Nothing too scary and we’ll always support you, but you need to be comfortable using smart devices and ready to learn as new tools emerge. If you’re the type of person who always sees a job through and takes pride in doing it properly, are prepared to get your hands dirty, able to manage your time and your workload, then we want you to apply.

All we ask of you is that you’re physically fit, are committed to delivering service and have a full driving licence – with no more than six points. And if you have the ability to drive up to a 7.5 tonne vehicle (C1 + E type licence) then that’s even better. We don’t ask for any formal qualifications but you’ll need a good level of Maths and English skills which will be checked during the recruitment process.

Our civil engineers can be required to work on any day from Monday to Sunday and start and finish between 07:00 and 21:00 depending on attendance patterns.
