Who we are

Openreach is made up of four parts – service delivery, fibre and network delivery, strategic infrastructure development, and headquarters.

We’re proud of what we do. Our people are hugely experienced, resourceful and innovative. They tackle complicated engineering problems – from coordinating works with councils, highways agencies, energy suppliers and landowners, to installing and maintaining the complex kit that provides ultrafast broadband services. They’ll go the extra mile and tackle any challenge to build a better, faster and more affordable network that helps our customers stay connected.

Our service delivery team

What do they do?

Our service delivery team looks after our local access network and our communications provider customers. Made up of 18,000 engineers, you’ve probably seen them working at the side of the road or the top of a telephone pole. It’s their job to deliver the superfast connectivity that’s the backbone of our business. So they spend their time installing and repairing the phone and broadband lines that connect homes and businesses all over the country – whatever the weather.

We carried out 96,400 installation jobs and 85,800 repair jobs per week between 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017. That’s 9.5 million jobs in 2017, or well over 37,000 every working day.

Our fibre and network delivery team

What do they do?

This team build network right across the UK – under roads in busy city streets, across running waters in Welsh valleys and over mountains in the Scottish highlands – they’re everywhere.

And they build and maintain network for everyone… families, schools, villages, towns, hospitals, cities, stadiums, communications providers, small businesses, big businesses, bigger businesses. They connect people – whoever they are and wherever they are.

In detail

The team of around 10,500 people are fuelled by almost 250,000 years’ experience in delivering for customers.

They’re here to build a large-scale Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) network for the UK… and that all starts with plans to build to three million premises by the end of 2020.

We want to create a legacy that sets our country’s digital economy up for years to come by increasing our FTTP network to ten million premises by the mid-2020s – and truly drive Britain’s digital revolution.

Our strategic infrastructure development team

What do they do?

Strategic Infrastructure Development is a new unit in Openreach. The team is made up of over 600 people who are helping to drive our Fibre First ambitions by building and strengthening Openreach’s strategic and commercial relationships with Government, Local Authorities, Developers and Industry bodies. They build these relationships so that Openreach can drive strategic build programmes at pace - and develop new business.

In a nutshell, if anyone wants to move, alter or add to Openreach’s existing infrastructure – they come through these guys.

The unit brings together BDUK, Regional Customer and Community Fibre teams; along with New Sites and our commercial programme to target the `final 5%’, so that the whole of the UK can have access to superfast speeds.

Headquarters

There are around 1,500 people in our headquarters. They include the executive management team, strategy, finance, legal, regulatory affairs, human resources, corporate affairs, customer, commercial and propositions as well as our chief engineer and chief technology and information officer.
